On May 6, Mill Valley Film Festival Senior Programmer Karen Davis visited ELS Language Center Instructor Toni Weingarten’s after-school salon at Dominican University in San Rafael for a lively discussion of American film.

High-school age students from China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other countries discussed the American films that they believed – before coming to the United States – best typified American life and lifestyle. The ELS students then discussed the American films that they felt more accurately reflected the reality of their experience since their arrival in the US.  Davis closed the program by presenting clips from a few films directed by foreigners (Michelangelo Antonioni, Wim Wenders) whose work displays their own artistic vision of the United States ( “Zabriskie Point” and “Paris Texas”).
