SOL IN THE GARDEN
After 16 years of incarceration, Sol is released from prison, when she discovers that coming into her own freedom can be as challenging as living behind bars. Through a community gardening collective of formerly incarcerated horticulturalists in East Oakland, Sol strives to recover her humanity and sense of self. Through gardening and reflection, Sol—who became a passionate activist against gun violence and mass incarceration—creates new memories and a vision for Oakland as a place where she heals and transforms her own community.(Emily Cohen Ibañez and Debora Souza Silva, US 2022, 21 min). This film may contain sensitive content about sexual abuse, gangs, and gun violence. Ages 18+

JOINING US IN PERSON are directors Emily Cohen Ibañez (Fruits of Labor, 2021), Debora Souza Silva (Black Mothers Love & Resist, 2022), and documentary film subject Sol Mercado. From Project Avary, Eric Almeida and Maggie Uribe will be leading the conversation.

An assortment of plants and grafted fruit trees, veggies, herbs from Planting Justice will be for sale at the event.
