That’s a wrap!

Many thanks to all of our amazing Summerfilm students, instructors, presenters, and special guests. This was a summer like no other, and it was nothing short of inspiring to watch all of our Summerfilm participants come together entirely online (from around the country!) for the first time to learn, share, engage, create and collaborate as they explored the world of film and filmmaking from every angle.

Our Behind the Scenes students met with more than a dozen film industry professionals who workshopped and demonstrated their specialized skills in screenwriting, sound design, stage combat, stop-motion animation, comedy acting, casting, voice over, silent film accompaniment, Super 8 film developing, and documentary interviewing. Putting these new skills into practice, each student then produced their own 1-minute film in a Super 8 Short Film Challenge.

Check out the results of their creative endeavors!

Our Film Production for Tweens students spent 2 full weeks learning all the ins and outs of the filmmaking process from camera techniques to crew roles, movie genres, story development and all stages of production. They watched movies, met guest filmmakers from around the country, and took virtual tours of local film studios and movie theaters (projection booth included!). Along the way they also shot and produced their own short personal documentaries and worked collaboratively to produce two group projects.

Our Young Curators may have worked the hardest of all. Over five days, they watched almost 200 short films by youth filmmakers from around the world, clocking over 20 hours of viewing time. After rigorous deliberation, the team of 7 teens selected the 15 films that will screen in the youth program at the 43rd Mill Valley Film Festival this fall. Over the course of the week, they also met with several programmers from MVFF and other festivals and independent theaters across the country, gaining valuable insights into the skills, experiences, and responsibilities of a film curator.

The MVFF43 Youth Program will be screened online during the Festival (October 8–18). Exact dates, times and film line-up will be announced at mvff.com in September!

Join us next summer for more great Summerfilm opportunities!
